I) Pointer (or hand) (1856)

This counter is a pointer (a hand) that counts only the clockwise revolutions of the crank and does not depend on the addition/subtraction button. A clearing button, below this counter, returns it to a zero setting. A pencil and paper are necessary to record either multiplier or divisor. Otherwise the machine operates like others of this age.

Opposite from the previous devices, the pointer doesn’t stop the driving mechanism when the multiplier digit is reached. The operator has to reset the counter to zero before the operation. He then rotates the crank until the desired digit is pointed by the counter.

For the division, when the operator stops, the pointer shows the quotient digit.
